UAW Workers Strike American Axle, Threatening GM Pickup Production
Nearly 1,000 United Auto Workers members walked off the job at American Axle & Manufacturing's plant in Three Rivers, Michigan, a move that could slow or halt General Motors pickup production within weeks as members push for improved wages and benefits.
The union notes that longtime workers once earning as much as $29/hour saw wages cut to $14.50 in 2008, with current pay topping out around $22/hour after a five-year progression. UAW President Shawn Fain declared "Time's up" during a livestreamed strike announcement.
